Prior to joining Taft Family Offices in 1988, he served three terms in the North Carolina State Senate, was a member of the UNC Board of Governors, the Southern Growth Policies Board and the North Carolina Museum of Art Board of Trustees.

Throughout the last 20 years, Tom has built upon his family’s history and experience as real estate developers by constructing or acquiring real estate investments in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Virginia and California. He has developed and owns interests in more than 3,000 apartments and nearly a million square feet of medical office, commercial office, retail, and warehouse/flex space; and holds additional ownership interests in office parks, retail spaces and mixed-use developments.

Previously, Tom served as legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Jim Hunt. He returned to his hometown to practice law with his father, building a practice that he has maintained for the past 45 years. Tom served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Golden L.E.A.F Foundation and President of the UNC Law School Alumni Association.  He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Southern Environmental Law Center. Furthermore, he is an active member of the Multi-Family Executive Association, National Apartment Association, National Multifamily Housing Council and the Urban Land Institute.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Tom has always recognized the vast importance of empowering our future leaders with the necessary tools to address the serious issues facing our environment. More importantly, he understands his responsibility and ability to act as a catalyst to inspire change. To that end, Tom established a distinguished Professorship at East Carolina University to help recruit world-class scholars to Greenville by endowing the Taft Professorship in Science Education ($1 Million) at the ECU College of Education, and the Taft Professorship in Environmental Law ($1 Million) at the UNC School of Law to cultivate greater environmental legal advocacy in the region by inspiring and challenging students to pick up the mantle of environmental protection.

Tom is fully commitment to developing more intelligent public policy, better enforcement of environmental laws and sustainability for a higher quality of life that still creates a prospering economy. A recognized pioneer, his contributions have been featured in ECU Foundation's Annual Report and Carolina Connections.

Our History

Since its incorporation as a real estate development firm in 1983 by E. Hoover Taft, Jr., Taft Family Offices has grown under the leadership of former N.C. State Sen. Thomas F. Taft, Sr. After taking the reins in 1988, Tom evolved and expanded the business into what is known today as Taft Family Ventures (TFV). The first major catalyst were Frankie Cash-Langley and Mike McCarty joining the enterprise as Chief Financial Officer and Director of Development respectively, with each bringing a unique skill-set of financial and development talents and potential. Then in 2008 and 2016 respectively, Tom’s sons Thomas F. Taft, Jr. and Jonathan G. Taft joined the family business, making TFV a third-generation family-owned enterprise built around a growing team of talented colleagues and professionals.
